Solar cooking whist not an overly complicated pastime, can occasionally lend itself to a degree of frustration, especially if the user is not that experienced or the solar cooker design is not that effective or well constructed. Generally a safe bet for the fledgling solar chef is to use a commercial solar oven as opposed to a home constructed variant, although in theory, if a solar cooker is constructed carefully, using well-guided instructions and with appropriate raw materials, these is no reason why it should not compete adequately with it's commercial peers. Of course it goes without saying that two additional pre-requisites are full sunshine (preferably on a cloudless day), and a bucket load of enthusiasm.
A speeding bullet shot from a firearm travels towards you at somewhere between 1000 to 3000 feet per second. If we blink 20-30 times per minute, that equates to roughly once every two seconds. Hopefully a person standing within 1000 feet of you is off target, because the bullet will be long gone by the time we are finished blinking. A similary impressive speed is the relative speed of sunshine.
Despite the fact that the sun is 93 million miles away from the earth, it takes a ray of sunshine just 8 minutes to reach earth from the surface of the sun (remarkably it takes the formative photon a million years to travel from the core of the sun to the surface of the sun). If one of the most effective methods of capturing the sun, is using a simple solar cooker to exploit the concept of passive solar energy, then we had better ensure we make maximum use of the available sunshine.
Classic solar cooking mistakes that needed to be avoided at all costs include the following:
- Ensure you use appropriate solar cook ware that have tight-fitting lids to maximize heat retention-use black pots and pans. Black enameled bellied pots work well, as do black enameled cast iron pots and black steel porcelain pots and baking pans. Pots with a thinner wall tend to heat quicker, but conversely do not retain heat as well as pots with a thicker construction.
- Ensure your solar oven is air-tight, or as air-tight as possible to adequately trap the sunshine. The cooking cavity must be effectively sealed or as close to being sealed as possible. The sunshine is reflected internally, retaining the heating. If you want to add some science to the equation, add a visible thermometer to the cooking cavity and record the internal heat throughout the day to gage the effectiveness of the solar cooker.
- Get a reliable weather report the day before you cook your meal in a solar oven. There is nothing more frustrating then being forced to prematurely end your cooking because of overcast or rainy weather. If it does happen, chalk it up to experience and complete your meal in a slow cooker. Sometimes we simply cannot get the weather perfectly right every time!
- Use gloves when opening and closing a solar oven, and when cooking in close proximity to a parabolic solar reflector use a good pair of dark glasses-do not underestimate how hot the inside of a cooker can become or how reflective a parabolic reflector can be. If children are involved, ensure there is adequate supervision.
- Avoid any form of shading or obstruction whilst tracking the sun. An idea is to have a test run without any food actually being cooked yet still simulating the continuous positioning of the cooker to follow the arc of the sun.
- Despite what you think or instinctly feel, avoid adding excess water to the food. Add water in accordance with the solar recipe and not more, even if you are tempted to add more. Solar cooking uses a lot less water compared to conventional cooking due to the lack of water evaporation (as a consequence of a tight-fitting lids-the water literally cannot escape).
- Most foods can solar cook all day, but be careful of fish and certain carbohydrates, eg pasta and rice, which usually only require 30-60 minutes. These food types can over cook and become mushy. Solar fish cooks deliciously but care must be taken not to cook too long to avoid the fish drying out. A tip with fish is to keep it well-basted and cover the fish with an adequate piece of food-grade wax paper to reduce the likelihood of the fish losing it's internal moisture.
